Getting Legally Married in Algarve: Requirements for US Couples

Legal ceremony available

What the law requires

Portugal allows foreigners to legally marry with no residency requirement. You need valid passports, birth certificates (issued within 6 months, translated to Portuguese, apostilled), and a Certificate of No Impediment from your home country. The application process takes 4-6 weeks before the ceremony. Beach weddings require permits from maritime police and local council. Many couples opt for a symbolic ceremony for greater venue flexibility and handle the legal paperwork at home.

Do your guests need a visa?

No visa for US passport holders on a typical wedding-length stay in Portugal. Guests just need a passport valid for the travel dates (six months beyond, to be safe).

Marriage laws and document requirements change. Confirm with your planner or the country's consulate before you book.
